turns the two into a plant count, and shows what you gain — or do not gain — by
staggering the rows instead of planting a square grid.

Choose a layout. A square grid lines plants up in both directions. Staggered
rows offset every other row by half a spacing, so each plant sits in the gap between
two in the row behind.

choice is made on numbers rather than on a rule of thumb.
How it is calculated
For a square grid, the calculator counts how many plant positions fit along each
direction, leaving half a spacing at each edge:
plants per row = floor(bed length in inches / plant spacing)
rows = floor(bed width in inches / row spacing)
total = rows x plants per row
The staggered layout is where it gets interesting. If every plant must stay at least
distance d from its neighbours, offsetting alternate rows lets the rows sit closer
together — specifically d x sqrt(3)/2, which is about 0.866d, because the three
plants around any gap form an equilateral triangle:
row pitch = plant spacing x 0.866
rows = floor(bed width in inches / row pitch)
full rows = plants per row
offset rows = plants per row, or one fewer when there is no slack at the end
That tighter pitch is where the often-quoted 15% comes from: 1 / 0.866 = 1.155. Note
that in the staggered layout the row spacing input is not used for the plant count —
the pitch is derived from the plant spacing. The row spacing figure is kept for the
square-grid comparison.
A worked example
A twenty by twenty foot plot at twelve inch spacing.
Square grid:
240 inches / 12 = 20 plants per row
240 inches / 12 = 20 rows
Total: 400 plants
Staggered:
Row pitch: 12 x 0.866 = 10.39 inches
240 / 10.39 = 23 rows
Full rows hold 20; offset rows hold 19, since 240 inches leaves no slack for the
half-spacing shift
12 full rows x 20 + 11 offset rows x 19 = 449 plants
That is 12.3% more, not 15.5%. The difference is the plant lost from the end of each
staggered row, plus the fact that rows only come in whole numbers. A flat 15% would
have promised 460.

Tips and common mistakes
Staggering is worth it in wide beds, not narrow ones. The gain only appears when the
tighter row pitch lets an extra row in. Run both numbers before you plan a bed around
it.
Leave yourself room to reach. A bed wider than four feet is hard to work from the
sides, whatever the spacing says. Plants you cannot reach do not get picked.
Spacing assumes the plant reaches full size. Harvesting young — cut-and-come-again
leaves, baby carrots — lets you plant tighter than any table suggests.
Tall crops shade short ones. Put the tomatoes and corn where they will not put the
lettuce in shadow all afternoon, which in the northern hemisphere usually means the
north side of the bed.
Common questions
Does staggered planting really fit 15% more plants?
About 15.5% more in theory, and usually less in practice. The theoretical gain comes from rows sitting 0.866 of a spacing apart instead of a full spacing. But rows and plants come in whole numbers, so a bed only benefits if it is deep enough to fit the extra row that tighter pitch makes room for. In a 4 foot wide bed at 12 inch spacing there is no room for a fifth row, and staggering fits fewer plants, not more. The calculator shows both layouts so you can see which wins in your bed.
What is the difference between plant spacing and row spacing?
Plant spacing is the gap between plants within a row. Row spacing is the gap between the rows themselves, and on a seed packet it is usually set by the access a person or a hoe needs rather than by what the plant wants. In a raised bed you rarely need to walk between rows, which is why intensive spacing in beds can be much tighter than a packet suggests.
Can I ignore the spacing on the seed packet?
Partly, and carefully. Packet spacings often assume field rows with walking room, so closing the row spacing up in a bed is usually fine. The in-row figure is closer to what the plant actually needs for light and air, and crowding it invites mildew and small fruit. Reduce row spacing first, in-row spacing last.
How do I space plants near the edge of a bed?
This calculator leaves half a spacing at each edge, so plants are not jammed against the frame. That is the convention that matches how beds are actually planted, and it is why an 8 foot row at 12 inch spacing fits 8 plants rather than 9.
Why does the calculator say fewer plants than area divided by spacing?
Because it counts whole plants that actually fit, not an area average. Dividing 32 square feet by one square foot per plant gives a tidy 32, but a bed 7 feet 6 inches long fits the same number of plants as one 8 feet long — the leftover 6 inches grows nothing. Counting positions rather than dividing areas is the honest answer.
Does closer spacing mean a bigger harvest?
Up to a point, then it reverses. Tighter spacing raises yield per square foot while each plant still gets enough light and water, which is the whole idea behind intensive bed growing. Past that point plants compete, fruit gets smaller, air stops moving through the foliage and disease follows. Crowding is a common cause of a disappointing harvest from a full-looking bed.
